Don’t Try This At Home : Laser Hair Removal

We here at The Modern Renaissance are skeptics when it comes to the promises made by new health and beauty products. While we loved the idea of never having to shave again, the premise that a laser could nearly painlessly render our body hairless for life seemed too good to be true.

However, when Groupon offered a 70% discount on a package of six laser hair removal sessions, we jumped at the chance to test the treatment without maxing out our credit cards. 

So, what’s our verdict?

 

Well, they were true to their word AND they lied.

The Lie: “It doesn’t hurt.”

HELLO?! To say that the laser doesn’t hurt is categorically false. With laser hair removal, a laser emits “light energy” to damage the hair follicle enough that the hair will fall out and never grow back. Burning one’s hair follicles isn’t going to feel like a relaxing trip to the spa, no matter how nice the room.

We liken the pain to the feeling of a very hot splash of water hitting the skin coupled with a lingering feeling of a band-aid being ripped off.  The intense pain only lasts as long as the laser is actually hitting the skin and the lingering pain lasts only a matter of minutes. We’ve also noticed that some areas of the body are far more sensitive to the heat than others—the bikini line being the most painful.

The Truth: “Permanent removal or significant reduction of the hair.”

In a word, Amazing. We have to admit it; we are converts! There’s nothing like looking at your skin weeks after the last time that you shaved and seeing that there is still no hair growth. The skin is smoother than it was when were shaving and our shower time is cut in half! No more nasty stubble or irritated skin. We can’t stop telling all of our friends to try it out.
